ABOUT US

The Cabbage Tree Vineyard is a small vineyard owned and operated by David and Winifred Bull. We planted most vines in 1998. Winifred is vineyard manager. David is winemaker.

Our vineyard name comes from the cabbage trees that grow amongst the vines. The cabbage tree is a much-loved icon of New Zealand.

The Cabbage Tree Vineyard has a prime location on the Martinborough Terrace. In this favoured location aged soils over river gravels provide a perfect terroir for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Summer and autumn are usually dry, with warm days and cool nights; conditions that give grapes lively flavours.

Our wine is made only from grapes grown in our vineyard. We are small enough to give personal attention to all steps of viticulture and winemaking - at every step taking options to maximise quality. For example, for optimum ripeness we selectively hand pick our Pinot Noir over several weeks.

We were delighted when our aim to produce premium wine was achieved in our first vintage. Our 2001 Chardonnay was awarded a gold medal, our 2001 Pinot Noir has two silver medals, and our other wines from this vintage have bronze medals.

Crafting wine is rewarding. We hope you get as much enjoyment from drinking our wine as we get from making it.
